For 2024, New Zealand's new 6-point Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa aims to provide a simplified pathway for high-skilled migration. Introduced on October 9, 2023, this updated points-based system requires applicants to accumulate 6 points from select criteria to qualify for residence. Key eligibility elements include:

1. Points Structure:

  • Points can be claimed for one of the following:

  • A relevant qualification (Bachelor's degree or higher).

  • New Zealand occupational registration (where applicable).

  • Earning at least 1.5 times the median wage for their job offer in New Zealand.

  • Additional points (up to 3) can be claimed for each year of skilled work experience in New Zealand, totaling a maximum of 9 points combined with the main criteria​

  • Aims Global

2. Job Requirement:

  • A job offer from a New Zealand accredited employer is mandatory to apply under this category.

3. Base Requirements:

  • Applicants must meet general health, character, English language, and age restrictions (must be under 56 years old). Partners and dependent children (up to 24 years) may be included if they also meet health and language criteria

4. Application Costs and Timelines:

  • Application processing takes approximately 16 weeks, with costs varying depending on the specific residence application. Biometric fees, medical assessments, and associated insurance requirements may apply but depend on the specifics of the applicant's case​
